Roof pointing is the process of repairing the mortar joints between the tiles or shingles on a pitched roof. This can include ridge capping, and hip tiles. This repair process if sometimes called roof repointing. On a pitched roof is it normal for the mortar in the joints to become defective. This is normally down to weathering, exposure to the elements and general wear. The process of roof pointing involves removing the damaged mortar and then replacing it with new mortar. Once this is done it secures the tile or tiles in place providing effective waterproofing for the roof and building below. Additionally, roof pointing enhances the structural stability of the roof and helps to increase the service life of the pitched roof.

Roof pointing involves applying a finishing layer, typically mortar, to seal and secure the joints between roof tiles or slates and ridge or hip tiles. Over time, the mortar used to fix these tiles can crack or weaken due to weathering, leaving the roof exposed to water penetration and potential structural issues. Pointing helps prevent leaks and ensures the roof’s stability by filling gaps or cracks between the tiles, maintaining a tight seal.
A modern alternative called flexible pointing is now frequently used in roofing, offering better resistance to movement caused by weather or temperature changes. According to the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC), flexible pointing is more durable and requires less upkeep than traditional mortar. Roof pointing is crucial for preserving the longevity and performance of a roof, especially in areas with heavy rainfall or harsh weather conditions. Properly applied pointing can extend the lifespan of a roof by up to 10-15 years, depending on the materials and quality of installation.
