On Timber Decks

Two coats of mastic asphalt R988 T25 to a total thickness of 20mm laid on to sheathing felt. The surface is to be painted with solar reflective paint or stone chippings are to be embedded in bitumen based adhesive.

Decks

Plywood: Plywood should be exterior grade type WMP bonded in accordance with BS6566:Part8:1985. Panels should be well secured to timber joists and noggins using nails.

Particleboard: Chipboards should conform to BS 5669:Part 2:1989 types C3, C4 or C5. Panels should be well secured to timber joists and noggins using nails. The boards should be pre-felted, and the joints be taped to give temporary waterproof covering. Two layers of non-bituminised building paper are required on top of the pre-felted chipboard to prevent adhesion.

Orient strand board should conform to BS 5669:Part 3: 1992 type F1 or F2. Panels should be well secured to timber joists and noggins using nails.

Thermal Design

To minimise the risk of condensation. The cavity space should be ventilated in accordance with current Building Regulations.

If the cavity ventilation ventilation is restricted then it is advisable to change the design to warm roof construction.
